Course Description/Overview

This practical course provides learners with the essential skills and knowledge required to diagnose, repair, and maintain common domestic appliances. Through hands-on training and troubleshooting exercises, students will develop proficiency in understanding appliance systems, identifying faults, and safely performing repairs on various household machines. This condensed program is ideal for individuals seeking to quickly enter the appliance repair industry or those looking to gain practical skills for personal use.

Modules Covered

  • Introduction to Appliance Repair:
  • Safety procedures, basic electrical principles, common tools, and diagnostic techniques.
  • Washing Machine Repair:
  • Understanding components (motors, pumps, timers), common faults, and repair procedures.
  • Refrigerator Repair:
  • Refrigeration cycle basics, compressor issues, thermostat problems, and defrost systems.
  • Oven and Stove Repair:
  • Electrical and gas oven components, heating elements, igniters, and control systems.
  • Microwave Oven Repair:
  • Magnetron operation, safety interlocks, and common electrical faults.
  • Small Appliance Repair:
  • Troubleshooting and repair of blenders, toasters, kettles, and other common household gadgets.
  • Customer Service and Business Basics:
  • Professional conduct, communication skills, and basic business considerations for appliance repair technicians.

Requirements for Registration

To qualify, applicants must:

  • Hold an NQF Level 1 qualification (Grade 9 equivalent) or higher.
  • Demonstrate basic English literacy (reading/writing) and numerical skills.
  • Submit a certified ID copy and School Report (Grade 9 or higher).

Note: No prior appliance repair experience required. Mature applicants (age 25+) without Grade 9 may apply via RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning).
